Blackberry users can now browse and buy a range of personal and business applications after Research in Motion (RIM) opened its online App World store.
Mike Lazaridis, President of RIM, said “Blackberry App World aggregates a wide variety of apps in a way that makes it easy to discover those that suit, while preserving the appropriate IT architecture and controls required by our enterprise customers.”
This is a giant leap forward for RIM as it is a replica of the very successful and ever growing Apple App Store, which mixes free and paid applications together.
The Blackberry App Store is available for immediate access to users located in the US, UK and Canada with additional country launches to follow in the future.
It is expected that the App Store will be accessible on all Blackberry devices that have a trackball fitted, which includes the Pearl, Curve, Bold and 8800 series mobiles.
Current featured applications include Windows Live Messenger, Salesforce CRM, Bloomberg and a Worldwide Hotel Booking application.
