Maidenhead, U.K. – May 18, 2009 - Flexible Working - Isolated from Small Businesses?
Today in the United Kingdom is National Work from Home Day where millions of workers will be enjoying the benefits of working from their homes.
As well as avoiding the fight through traffic or the over-crowded public transport, many people will have started work today in a better state of mind, completely un-stressed and un-flustered which of course directly impacts on their efficiency.
Giving a worker the opportunity to work from home not only improves employee relations but helps to enhance work-life balance which has an impact on efficiency.
However, many small business owners still have the opinion that if they can’t see a body at a desk then they don’t trust that the work is being done.
Centric Systems believe that trust in any sort of relationship is the key to success and if that trust is broken or it doesn’t exist to begin with then there is a vast limitation. Remote working can be monitored to an extent, especially where IT is involved but a level of trust will always be required.
Working from home is a growing trend which is flourishing year by year. According to the Labour Force Survey, carried out quarterly by the Office for National Statistics, over 3.4 million people, 12 per cent of the working population, regularly or permanently work from home. In the last ten years that figure has increased by a fifth. More than half a million additional people now work from home.
The National Group on Home Working says that small companies could potentially be missing out on high-calibre employees by failing to offer the remote working facilities.
"Allowing people to work from home is giving employers access to a different pool of people, a wider pool of workers," Nesta Holden, a spokesperson for the group, commented.
"People want to work from home because of the flexibility; it's a way of fitting your work around your life."
