SaaS - Sink or Swim?

Maidenhead, U.K. – April 21, 2009 - SaaS - Sink or Swim?

SaaS, otherwise known as Software as a Service aims to provide the customer with an on-demand facility to access and use a variety of software applications, removing the burden and expense of them having to license, implement and manage in-house hardware and software that would provide the same result.

SaaS software vendors typically host the application on their own web servers and then provide online access to the application from a web browser, whist the software and data are stored on the web servers.

SaaS reduces the traditional software maintenance costs and ongoing software support as well as enabling software to become a variable expense to a business rather than a fixed cost at the time of purchase.

The sharing of end-user licenses and on-demand use can help reduce investment in server hardware.

SaaS comes in many forms such as content, communications and collaboration applications, customer relationship management and remote data backup.

According to research firm Gartner, 25 percent of new business software will be delivered as Software as a Service by 2011.

“As SaaS became a viable delivery model from 2000 to 2003, most providers supplied ‘good enough’ functionality with core configuration capabilities. SaaS and solving business complexity were two phrases not associated with each other,"Robert DeSisto, research vice president for Gartner. "The trend has clearly begun to change. For example, SaaS providers are enhancing their software functionality and improving the ease with which companies can customize and more uniquely configure SaaS software to meet business requirements."
